Assembly & Setup

Unpack all parts and inspect for damage. Assembly requires basic tools (included).

  1. Handle Assembly: Attach upper and lower handles using provided hardware.
  2. Chute Assembly: Install discharge chute and deflector; connect control cables.
  3. Controls: Install control levers and connect cables to auger and drive systems.
  4. Wheels & Skid Shoes: Attach wheels and adjust skid shoes to desired height.
  5. Engine Prep: Check oil level, add fuel (unleaded gasoline only), and connect battery (if electric start model).

WARNING! Machine is heavy; use assistance during assembly. Ensure all bolts and connections are tight before operation.

Controls & Operation

Familiarize yourself with all controls before starting the engine.

  1. Starting: For electric start, insert key, plug in cord, and turn key. For recoil start, set choke, and pull cord firmly.
  2. Drive Control: Squeeze lever to engage drive; release to stop. Use speed selector to choose forward or reverse speed.
  3. Auger Control: Squeeze lever to engage auger rotation; release to stop.
  4. Steering: Use power steering control (if equipped) or differential drive for turning.
  5. Chute Control: Use remote control levers to rotate chute left/right and adjust deflector angle.

CAUTION! Always operate from behind handles. Keep hands and feet away from rotating parts. Never attempt to clear clog while engine is running.

Maintenance Schedule

Regular maintenance ensures reliability and extends machine life.

Before Each Use: Check oil level, inspect for loose hardware, check tire pressure, ensure controls operate freely.

After Each Use: Clean snow and debris from machine. Allow to run a few minutes to dry internal components.

Every 25 Hours/Seasonally: Change engine oil (check manual for specific oil type and capacity). Check and lubricate all pivot points, cables, and chute mechanism.

Every 100 Hours/As Needed: Inspect skid shoes and scraper bar for wear. Inspect auger paddles and replace if worn. Check friction disc and drive belt for wear.

Engine Care

Refer to separate engine manual for detailed specifications.

  1. Oil: Check level before each use. Change oil after first 5 hours, then every season or 25 hours. Use SAE 5W-30 synthetic or as recommended.
  2. Fuel: Use fresh, unleaded gasoline with a minimum 87 octane. Add fuel stabilizer for storage. Never use E85 gasoline.
  3. Air Filter: Clean foam pre-cleaner every 25 hours. Replace paper filter element as needed or annually.
  4. Spark Plug: Clean and re-gap every season. Replace annually or per engine manual.
  5. Battery (Electric Start): Keep terminals clean. Charge periodically during off-season storage.

Tip: Always run engine for a few minutes after adding stabilizer to circulate treated fuel through carburetor.

Auger & Drive System

The two-stage system uses an auger to gather snow and an impeller to discharge it.

  1. Auger Shear Pins: Designed to break if auger hits a solid object. Always replace with identical shear pins. Never use standard bolts.
  2. Drive Belt: Inspect for cracks or wear. Tension is automatic; ensure belt is seated on pulleys.
  3. Friction Disc: Inspect for wear. Adjust or replace if drive engagement is slipping.
  4. Lubrication: Grease auger shaft bearings and chute rotation points at recommended intervals.

WARNING! Disconnect spark plug wire before performing any maintenance on auger or drive system.

Safety Features

Deadman Control: Auger and drive controls must be held down to operate. Releasing them stops motion immediately. Safety Labels: Read and understand all labels on machine. Proper Attire: Wear sturdy boots, eye protection, and avoid loose clothing. Clear Area: Remove obstacles from path before operation. Shut Off: Turn off engine and remove key before unclogging or servicing.

Storage & Off-Season Care

Proper storage prevents fuel system issues and corrosion.

  1. Fuel System: Add fuel stabilizer to tank, run engine for 5 minutes, then turn fuel valve off and run engine until it stops to drain carburetor. OR, drain fuel tank and carburetor completely.
  2. Oil: Change oil if not done at end of season.
  3. Clean: Thoroughly clean entire machine of snow, salt, and debris.
  4. Lubricate: Apply light oil to all exposed metal parts and cables to prevent rust.
  5. Store: Keep in a dry, covered location. Protect from rodents.

CAUTION! Gasoline is flammable. Perform fuel-related tasks in a well-ventilated area away from sparks or flames.

Warranty Information

Ariens provides a limited warranty for residential use. The Deluxe 28 typically includes a 3-year limited warranty on the snow thrower and a 5-year limited warranty on the auger housing. The engine is covered by a separate manufacturer's warranty (e.g., 3 years). Proof of purchase is required. Warranty does not cover damage from misuse, lack of maintenance, or commercial use.
