Maintenance Schedule

Regular maintenance ensures peak performance and extends machine life.

IntervalTask
Before each useCheck tire pressure, inspect for loose parts, check oil level
Every 8 hoursClean deck underside, check blade condition
Every 25 hoursChange engine oil (first change at 5 hours), check air filter
Every 50 hoursReplace air filter, check spark plug, lubricate pivot points
Every 100 hoursReplace spark plug, check drive belt tension

Note: Service intervals may vary based on operating conditions.

Engine Service

Procedures for basic engine maintenance.

  1. Oil Change: Run engine to warm oil. Disconnect spark plug. Drain oil via drain plug into pan. Refill with 20 oz of SAE 30 or 10W-30.
  2. Air Filter: Remove cover, clean foam pre-filter (if equipped), replace paper element if dirty.
  3. Spark Plug: Remove wire, clean area, use socket to remove plug. Gap to 0.030". Install and tighten to 18 ft-lbs.
  4. Fuel System: Use fresh fuel. Add fuel stabilizer for storage. Replace fuel filter annually.

CAUTION! Engine is hot after operation. Allow to cool before servicing.

Deck & Blade Service

Maintaining the cutting deck and blades is critical for quality cut.

  1. Blade Removal: Disconnect spark plug. Tip mower on side (carburetor side up). Use block to secure deck. Remove blade bolt (clockwise threads) with socket.
  2. Blade Sharpening: Sharpen at 30-degree angle using file or grinder. Balance blade before reinstalling.
  3. Deck Cleaning: Scrape debris from underside with putty knife. Rinse with water (avoid bearings and pulley).
  4. Belt Inspection: Check V-belt for cracks, fraying, or glazing. Adjust tension per manual.

WARNING! Wear heavy gloves when handling blades. Ensure blade is securely tightened (40-45 ft-lbs).

Drive System & Transmission

The hydrostatic transmission requires minimal service but periodic checks.

  1. Drive Belt: Inspect for wear. Replace if damaged. Route new belt per diagram in manual.
  2. Transmission Fluid: Sealed unit; no fluid change required under normal use. Check for leaks.
  3. Linkage Adjustment: If drive speed is inconsistent, adjust control linkage per manual.
  4. Tire Pressure: Maintain 12 PSI in front tires, 10 PSI in rear tires for optimal traction.

Tip: Avoid spinning tires on slippery surfaces to prevent transmission damage.

Electrical System

Basic electrical component service.

CAUTION! Disconnect battery negative terminal before performing electrical work.

Storage & Off-Season Care

Proper storage prevents fuel system issues and corrosion.

  1. Run engine to warm oil, then change oil and filter.
  2. Add fuel stabilizer to tank, run engine for 5 minutes to circulate.
  3. Disconnect spark plug and drain fuel tank OR run engine until it stalls.
  4. Clean entire mower thoroughly, especially underside of deck.
  5. Remove battery, store in cool dry place, and maintain charge.
  6. Store in a dry, covered area, preferably on blocks to relieve tire pressure.

WARNING! Gasoline left in carburetor can form varnish and clog jets.
