WARNING! Always disconnect spark plug wire before performing maintenance.

Engine Specifications

Controls and Features

Key components: Fuel tank, oil fill cap/dipstick, air cleaner, muffler, spark plug, recoil starter, throttle/choke controls.

  1. Fuel Valve: On/Off control for fuel flow.
  2. Choke Lever: Enriches fuel mixture for cold starts.
  3. Throttle Lever: Controls engine speed (Slow-Fast).
  4. Recoil Starter Handle: Pull to crank engine.
  5. Oil Drain Plug: Located at base of engine.
  6. Spark Plug: NGK BPR6ES (gap 0.030 in).

Note: Refer to equipment manual for location of controls on specific machine.

Pre-Operation Check

Perform these checks before each use.

  1. Oil Level: Check with dipstick; add SAE 10W-30 if low.
  2. Fuel Level: Fill with fresh gasoline; avoid overfilling.
  3. Air Cleaner: Inspect for dirt; clean or replace if clogged.
  4. Cooling Fins: Remove debris from cylinder head and blower housing.
  5. Fasteners: Ensure all bolts/nuts are tight.
  6. Spark Plug Wire: Securely connected.

CAUTION! Never run engine with low oil; can cause severe damage.

Starting the Engine

Follow steps for cold or warm engine.

  1. Move equipment to open, level area.
  2. Turn fuel valve to ON position.
  3. Set throttle to FAST position.
  4. For cold engine: Move choke lever to CLOSED.
  5. Pull recoil starter handle briskly until engine fires.
  6. Once engine starts, gradually move choke to OPEN.
  7. Allow engine to warm up at half-throttle for 2-3 minutes.

Tip: If engine fails to start after 3 pulls, check fuel, spark, and choke setting.

Operating Instructions

Operate engine at recommended speed for attached equipment.

Stopping: Move throttle to SLOW, let idle 30 seconds, turn ignition/key OFF, close fuel valve.

Maintenance Schedule

IntervalTask
Before each useCheck oil, fuel, air cleaner, fasteners
First 5 hoursChange oil (break-in)
Every 25 hoursChange oil, clean air filter, check spark plug
Every 50 hoursReplace air filter, inspect fuel filter, clean cooling fins
Every 100 hoursReplace spark plug, check valve clearance
SeasonallyDrain fuel or add stabilizer for storage

Fuel System

Use clean, fresh unleaded gasoline. Ethanol blends up to 10% acceptable.

  1. Fuel Tank Capacity: 1.5 gallons (5.7 L).
  2. Fuel Filter: Inline; replace if restricted.
  3. Carburetor: Fixed-jet; adjustments require special tools.
  4. Fuel Shut-off: Turn valve OFF when storing or transporting.

WARNING! Gasoline is flammable; store in approved container away from ignition sources.

Lubrication System

Splash lubrication; no oil pump. Use SAE 10W-30 for temperatures above 32°F (0°C).

  1. Oil Change: Run engine to warm oil, then drain via plug.
  2. Refill: Add 20 oz (0.6 L) to upper mark on dipstick.
  3. Oil Type: Detergent motor oil API classification SJ or higher.
  4. Disposal: Collect used oil in container; recycle per local regulations.

CAUTION! Overfilling can cause smoking, hard starting, or seal damage.

Cooling & Air Cleaner

Air-cooled design relies on clean fins and proper airflow.

Note: Operating without air filter voids warranty and causes rapid wear.

Storage Procedure

Prepare engine for storage if not used for 30+ days.

  1. Drain fuel tank or add fuel stabilizer (follow product instructions).
  2. Run engine 5 minutes to circulate treated fuel through carburetor.
  3. Change oil while engine is warm.
  4. Remove spark plug, add 1 teaspoon oil into cylinder, pull starter slowly to coat, reinstall plug.
  5. Clean exterior, cover, and store in dry location.

Tip: For long-term storage, drain carburetor float bowl to prevent gumming.

Troubleshooting

SymptomPossible CauseCorrective Action
Engine won't startNo fuel, bad spark, choke not setCheck fuel valve, spark plug gap/condition, use choke for cold start.
Hard startingDirty air filter, old fuel, low compressionClean/replace filter, drain old gas, check compression (should be >90 psi).
Engine runs roughWater in fuel, clogged fuel filter, dirty carburetorDrain fuel tank, replace filter, clean carburetor jets.
OverheatingLow oil, dirty cooling fins, overloadingCheck oil level, clean fins, reduce load.
Excessive vibrationLoose mounting bolts, bent blade/crankshaftTighten bolts, inspect for damage.
Oil leakageLoose drain plug, worn seals/gasketsTighten plug, replace seals if necessary.
